Who are the Harronir?
Who?
What?
Why?
Trolls?
Let’s try and answer some of these questions.
The Harronir are a new race introduced in the war within the expansion, not only this they feature as one of three new races in the pre-expansion cinematics.
Along with the Earthern and the Arathi, the Harronir are one of our allies in the fight against xal-atah, Neruibians and the void.
They appear as some kind of missing link between trolls and night elves (although this hasn’t been confirmed), complete with bat-like ears, grey-purple skin, fur, quills and fangs.
They are definitely more primitive in nature (with nature being the key word here), they have also been show to be able to shift into a large bat-from, showing some affinity with nature magic and druidism.
But where are they?
Other than making a brief appearance in the azj-kahet storyline, they are mostly absent from the expansion, which is confusing considering they are supposed to be one of our big three allies.
Even their story is left quite mysterious as not much is known here either.
We know they are very connected to the mysterious roots found under the ground (seemingly the roots of a forgotten world tree), but why we don’t know yet? They seem charged with protecting these roots and given how deep they go this could be connected with the world's soul itself but all this is speculation.
So we don’t know very much.
However following some early data mining in the expansion, we do know there are a lot of customisation options for this race, far more than we would usually expect from a regular NPC race.
This has led many to suspect that they may become a future playable race.
This also makes me think that while they are not playing a very big part in the expansion currently, the reason for all the customisation options and focus on this seemingly insignificant race, is that they will play a much bigger part in future patches.
However, at this stage, we know almost nothing about them and have even less idea as to how/why they would join the Horde or Alliance or both.
They are one of the expansion’s biggest mysteries, and that is why they are one of the expansion’s best features.
They allow us to think and speculate about what’s to come, which is always one of the best parts of any expansion.
So let’s speculate.
I don’t like the idea that they are some “missing link” between trolls and night elves.
Mainly because this lore is already very established and works well, we don’t need another story about some point between Troll and Night Elf, it wouldn’t add much.
But there is no denying their resemblance to these two races.
So instead of being a “missing link”, they could be an “offshoot” from trolls, an ancient species of troll that went (or were called) underground to protect the world soul and these world tree roots.
Another option is a convergent evolution from Trolls, not related to trolls or night elves at all but evolved and developed in a very similar manner (we have already seen president for this in the Earthern and dwarves).
As to their story, it seems their job is to protect the roots, and the roots are under threat by the black blood the Nerubians are using.
Therefore they may seek help in protecting the roots from the Horde and/or Alliance (although due to their secretive behaviour, this will not be a popular option). Also, the enemy of my enemy is my friend routine will cause our factions to join with the Harronir.
Although I can’t see them joining us full-time.
They are a race of secretive people who have a very specialised role to protect the world, a people like this would not drop everything to join in a faction war.
However, like the Pandaren, it could be a subsection of Harronir society that breaks away from their oath to join the factions and not the whole race.
That’s enough tin-foil hat time.
Whatever happens with the Harronir, it’s clear they are important to the story and they are an interesting mystery.
But what do you think?
Are the Harronir going to become playable?
Do you think they will become important?
How do you think their story will play out?
