An interesting look into Horde history:
A different take on new classes
Recently there was a survey leaked online that was looking at public opinion on potential new classes in Wow.
There are divided opinions on whether this survey is real or fake but either way it is interesting and got me thinking about what we think of when we imagine a new class in Wow.
Most of the classes in the survey were what we would expect from Blizzard such as necromancer, bard and tinker.
There were a couple of more unique class ideas that you wouldn’t necessarily expect such as witch, leyweaver and gunner.
However looking at the list I couldn’t help but think that they all seemed to follow the traditional route that we think of when we consider a new Wow class. I think that a new class should bring things we haven’t seen in Wow before.
So here I am going to throw out some ideas about new classes that aim to bring something more unique to Wow. Let us begin with a cloth tank.
There are only two armour type/role combinations that have not been explored in Wow classes which are mail tanks and cloth tanks.
Tanks being all about taking damage and holding threat to protect other members of the group does not clearly synergise with the idea of the lightest armoured classes in the game.
However we have already seen with Guardian druids and vengeance demon hunters that even more lightly armoured classes can mitigate this damage reduction in other ways.
The same could be done with a cloth tank, the simplest way of doing this could be to utilise spells similar to the mage armour spells where the cloth tank would be able to place powerful shields on themselves that improved their armour and threat generation.
However I feel this is not as interesting or unique as a cloth tank deserves.
This idea I am going to call an Illusionist, this class tricks the enemy’s mind into thinking that a powerful target is near them and causes them to attack but this is an illusion and there is no target. Therefore the illusionist protects the group by distracting the target’s attacks and holds this threat through various spells.
This way the Illusionist is “tanking” by holding threat and taking large amounts of damage but is a cloth wearer and is also doing this at range.
The illusionist would use various illusions to trick the target with larger illusions holding more threat and health but requiring more resources to maintain. Also while damage is not a tanks main role they are still required to deal some damage, this leads to one of the illusionist’s mechanics.
The illusionist would be required to form a balance between maintaining the illusion on the target/targets and attacking the target’s mind, which would cause both damage and cause the target to be easier to fool and therefore making it easier/require less resources to maintain your illusion.
So the class’s mechanic would be to “spin the plates” between maintaining a “weak mind” on the target whilst maintaining the illusion and trying to not let either drop.
Another consideration to make this tank work with healers is that the illusion’s health would be connected to the illusionist’s health, so the healer would have to keep the illusionist healed in order for the illusion to remain healthy and therefore remain active (just like they would a normal tank).
There could also be a DPS version of this class that focuses on damaging illusions instead of tanking illusions.
This class would also come with the usual interrupts, CC and snares etc. as well as being subject to the usual balancing issues.
My main reason for suggesting this class is to provide something we haven’t seen in Wow classes before and to provide something that is more thought-provoking and unique than other suggestions.
My second suggestion is one that utilises a weapon type for more versatility. I like the idea of my character wielding a gun however I am forced into the class of hunter (possibly consider rogue but this is a simple pistol shoot spell rather than wielding a gun).
What if we introduce another class that can use the gun weapon proficiency and uses it slightly differently?
I am going to call this class the Technomancer. Similar to the idea of a Tinker this class would blend the use of magic and technology. Using guns (both duel-wielding and rifles) this class would be able to infuse their weapon/s with magic to improve/change their damage outputs, they would also be able to use other technology such as grenades, forcefields, teleporters etc.
The other side of the Technomancer is magic where they can choose to focus on the magic of their class, using a one-handed pistol leaving the other hand free for spells they can act more like a typical magic user but with some pistol-based attacks as well.
The class would be mail users therefore making them slightly more “survival” than typical mages/warlocks.
The first spec would DPS using a rifle and more technology, the second would DPS using a single pistol and focus on magic, while the third would be a tanking class that would use melee weapons and focus on mage armour and forcefields for tanking protection. Thus providing the mail tank that we don’t currently have in the game.
I feel that this class would fill roles we don’t currently see in-game and also give us players a flavour of class that we don’t currently see in-game very often making them feel more unique.
But what do you think?
Do you like these ideas or not?
What changes would you make?
What classes do you think could be more interesting?
